Microsoft has come forth to place an official statement on why acquiring Activision Blizzard would benefit the gaming industry as a whole. The $68.7 billion acquisition is currently refuted by the US Federal Trade Commission, claiming that Xbox would be put at the forefront of its competitors after its deal.
In the official statements, Microsoft claims that acquiring Activision is in the best interest of the gaming industry, and has no will to create only exclusive games under its banner. They instead wish to make titles like Call of Duty more accessible to other platforms, such as introducing it to Steam and Switch. But more importantly, their primary aim is mobile gaming, and having Activision Blizzard will help Xbox games widen their reach. Activision is the parent company to King, which produces games like Candy Crush and Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! Getting some insight will deepen Xbox’s reach in the mobile industry.
The FTC also criticized Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax, a subsidiary of Bethesda Softworks, and claimed to put their titles under Xbox’s belt. Microsoft defended the case by stating that they did offer the rights to Sony to publish the exclusive titles like Redfall under their gaming subscription service, PlayStation Plus, but was turned down. This further proved Microsoft’s point of not withholding game titles from their competitors, and would rather it has a wider reach to enable cross-platform gaming that would benefit gamers across the globe.
