Those who are familiar with The Lord Of The Rings series would find Elendil’s Sword a familiar item in The Rings of Power. The sword was briefly brought out in Episode 3 of The Rings of Power, but would later have a darker history as time went on. The sword is called Narsil, and would later be known as the Sword that was Broken, after being used during the War of the Last Alliance and being broken into various shards, with the owner, King Elendil (Lloyd Owen), slain in battle.
That is before Elendil and his son, Isildur, had successfully severed the ring from Sauron’s finger. In Episode 3 of TROP, King Elendil was seen holding Narsil for the first time.
The significance that Narsil will have in the grand scheme of things is already known, but for now, King Elendil has come into possession of the sword that will vanquish Sauron back to the depths. Narsil was forged during the First Ages by Telchar of Nogrod, a famed Dwarven-smith. It was later taken to Númenor, and not much else is known about its state, except for the fact that it was in possession by the Elven High Kings, and later with the Lords of Andúnië. From there, it was eventually handed over to Elendil of Andúnië through being the direct descendent of Elros, the first King of Númenor, which is where the sword stands during the time of The Rings of Power. Narsil was imbued with the ability to protect its owner, as well as instill fear in its enemies.
Initially, the Queen-regent of Númenor, Míriel, was hesitant upon seeing Elendil. She was not aware that Elros had a decedent in the first place. But upon learning about his lineage and finding it suitable, she bestowed Narsil as his, being the rightful heir of the sword. Perhaps Míriel gave it to him in good faith, or perhaps there is something else brewing underneath that goodwill. Nevertheless, as the series draws on, we will get to learn more about the importance Narsil will have on the show.
