In-Game Quests and Events
The easiest way to get yourself a pet is to complete the tutorial quest called Learning about Pets. You can get this quest after completing the main story quest Demons in Prideholme. Once you are in Prideholme, find Working Achatemeow NPC in the tavern to get the Learning about Pets quest. Then find Blueberry and Redberry and speak to them to get some small tasks. After completing them, go back to Working Achatemeow to get your first pet, the White Bunny.
You can get another pet late into the game after unlocking the Guide Quest at level 50. You can get yourself a walking egg if you can complete the quest. Certain limited-time events can gift you a pet as well.
Purchase from Shop
You can directly purchase any pet you desire from the cash shop in-game, and some pets will cost you Royal Crystals. For 540 Crystals, you can get a Saphia or a Helgaia, and if you splurge around 1,300 Royal Crystals, you can get any of the four types of Totoiki. You can also acquire pets from any Founder Pack levels.
To use your pet, open the pet menu using Alt+P, then click on the pet you wish to use. They will accompany you and pick up any dropped loot as well as give you buffs if you own Crystalline Aura.
