Ever since the original Subnautica game launched back in 2018, the series has become a fan favorite. Subnautica: Below Zero was a worthy successor to the first game, and it continued its success story. This series is Unknown World’s biggest and most successful venture to date, and thus it is no surprise that they are willing to come up with a third installment in the series.
News confirming that a Subnautica 3 is in its early stages of development was found in a tweet from Unknown Worlds which sought a senior narrative designer for “the next game in the Subnautica universe”. By following the link attached to the tweet, we find more information about the game. The upcoming game will necessarily not be a sequel to the past games in the series.
Unknown Worlds’ job listing suggests the fact that this game will take another step forward on Planet K546B, the watery world seen in the games. The job listing also states that the candidate should have relevant experience in the “open games world” and the development of an “open player-driven experience.” This inadvertently suggests that the upcoming game will be an open-world game.
Unknown Worlds already had expressed the desire to make the next Subnautica game into a much bigger installment than Below Zero. The developers are prepping for a completely revamped multiplayer experience as well. The job listing also states that the candidate should have the ability to “define the history and lore of a new sci-fi world.” This suggests that the game might be set in a different planet altogether and/or it might be a prequel to the series.
Unknown Worlds was acquired by PUBG Corporation’s parent company, Krafton, in 2021. This acquisition was mainly to create a genre-defining turn-based strategy game set in a sci-fi world. Krafton announced this game last year, and Unknown Worlds’ job listings hint at the fact that this game might be in its early stages of development already.
We are excited about both of these games Unknown Worlds currently is developing.
