First, you require the watering jug to help you carry water from any water source back to your settlement. You can craft the water jug after you have placed the pottery crafting table in your base. You can unlock this table by progressing through the game and unlocking it from the knowledge and technology tree. After placing the Pottery Table down, select it to unlock the water jug crafting blueprint. This unlocks at level 15, and you will require 20x Clay, 2x Leather Rope, and 2x Ceramic Mold to craft one Water Jug

Now that you have the Water Jug, make your way to any water source. If you have a well in your settlement, you can use that too. Press E to draw water into the water jug, then equip the jug and make your way to the trough. Press the left mouse button the same way you would use to attack, and the water will be poured from the jug into the trough. You can check how much water is required for the trough by standing near it and checking out the Water Amount. Repeat this process a few times to fill up the trough. You can also assign a villager to fill it up when you are not around
