When you first start playing Risk of Rain Returns, you will notice a new option called the Providence Trails. But for now, you cannot access it in the very beginning of the game. To unlock the Providence Trails, you need to unlock at least one survivor. There are thirteen survivors in Risk of Rain Returns, which includes three new survivors. You just need to unlock one survivor first to get the option to run the Providence Trails.

Providence Trails can be played anytime during the main game, and supply you with mini challenges. The challenges will require certain survivors to play, so once you have unlocked the survivor, their mini challenge will also be unlocked. You also need to complete any previous trails to unlock new ones. The challenges provided will test the survivor’s mobility and skill, which acts like a tutorial for a new ability or skill that can be unlocked at the end of the trail. Since each character is tied to one unique trail, you can unlock new abilities for that character this way.

The Providence Trails will also keep track of your score depending on how quickly you complete the challenges. The better your score, the better your completed rank, and the more rewards you can unlock.
