With two types of Runic Attacks in the game – Light and Heavy, it can be confusing to understand how they work, which is why we have a guide for you. This tutorial on upgrading focuses on Heavy Runic Attacks.

If you have played previous God of War games, you will know that Ragnarok has a lot of the same features about the special skills that you can attach to your weapons. Heavy Runic Attacks need to be unlocked first before you can begin using them. Meanwhile, the Light Runic Attacks are already unlocked for you as part of the main story mission.

To upgrade Heavy Runic Attacks, you will need to use your XP. On the weapon that you have the Heavy Runic Attack equipped, you will find the tab at the bottom. If you have enough XP, the upgrade button will light up, and you can press the Square button to upgrade this particular Heavy Runic Attack.

You will need to look for Heavy Runic Attacks to find and use them, and sometimes, you will get one as a reward for completing a boss fight in the main story. If you are looking for them, you can find them in Legendary Chests which are scattered all over the map.
