Before you head over to get yourself a Thestral, you should learn most of the basic attacking spells, as the area where you will be venturing off to is quite dangerous. You should only attempt to travel here if you are level 16 and above. You will also need a mount to take you here, as the location is quite dangerous for a trek. Your handy broom is enough to help you out.
Marunweem Lake is located in the World Map, but before you can get to the area there is a powerful Goblin boss you need to defeat. To find him, head over to the Tomb of Treachery in Poidsear Coast, then enter the dungeon. The dungeon will be filled with Goblin enemies, and after defeating them you will encounter Ogbert the Odd, the boss in the area. If you are tired of the goblin encounters, you can always use the Disillusionment Charm to sneak past them, but you have to fight the boss to get to the lake. Use your best-attacking spells and combos to get rid of him.
After that, you can go past and unlock the Marunweem Lake Floo Flame. You are not free to explore the area whenever you wish.
