When you meet Melina at the Forge of the Giants Site of Grace after defeating the Fire Giant, she will ask you if you are prepared to commit a cardinal sin. If you agree, she will proceed to burn down the Erdtree. You can refuse for the time being if you have any unfinished quests, as burning down the Erdtree will have dire consequences for you and other NPCs in the game. This option cannot be reversed but is important to use to get the main story endings.
The cardinal sin pertains to only burning down the Erdtree. Everything that comes after is the repercussions of your actions. We have an entire guide that covers if you should burn the Erdtree or not, but you won’t have a choice on the matter once you do reach that certain point of no return. However, you can choose who burns down the Erdtree. If you have picked up the Frenzied Flame and haven’t reversed the effects yet, you can burn down the Erdtree yourself since Melina will not be with you anymore. If not, she will sacrifice herself to burn the tree down.
