The Radeon RX 580 8GB is one of the most successful cards Team Red has ever created. This card was based on the GCN 5th generation architecture and was introduced for $229 back in April 2017. But, this five-year-old GPU still stacks up quite well in modern AAA titles. Looking at the competition, this card manages to outperform both the GTX 1060 6GB and the GTX 1650 Super 4GB cards, which increases its value proposition hugely. Let us have a look at whether this card is worth spending money on in 2022.
The Radeon RX 580 8GB is based on the Polaris 20 graphics processor which was designed on the GCN 5th generation architecture. It packs 2,304 shading units, 144 Texture Mapping Units (TMUs), 32 Render Output Units (ROPs), and 36 Compute Units (CUs). The card is a power hog and is rated for whopping 185W. It needs a single 8-pin power connection, which makes it awfully demanding for a 1080p capable card.
The RX 580 is based on an aging design. Newer cards like the RX 5500 XT and RX 6500 XT slightly outperform this older behemoth while being priced lesser than it. The RDNA architecture was designed to be much more efficient and capable than the older GCN architecture. It will have significantly shorter driver support than the newer cards and will result in higher electricity bills. And now that graphics card prices are finally falling, we see no reason why gamers will get their hands on this older card.
The RX 580 used to be great value-for-money, but both AMD and Nvidia have introduced options that make this card feel a bit offbeat today. It has been long five years since this card was first introduced to the market. Therefore, it is no surprise that its days are over.
