You will require iron to craft certain weapons, like the iron pickaxe and iron axe. To get some iron, you need to find iron mines and mine for iron ore. During the early game, you can find an iron mine beside Iwasaki. If you have not ventured up to the point where Iwasaki is marked on the map, then you have to make progress in the main quests. You will unlock Iwasaki after visiting the watchtower.
To find Iwasaki, cross the bridge south os Sosogi then head east into Eulalia grass fields. There is a dirt path here that leads to the watchtower. From there, take any of the roads that go east till you come across another stream. Cross it, then go past the incomplete bridge and keep going down this road. You will know you are in the right place if you cross a beggar. Keep going past the beggar to reach Iwasaki. From there, keep following the path till you find the iron mine.
Another way to get iron ore is to break down bigger rocks and boulders. Certain rocks can give iron after you break them down, and they are usually found in the middle of forests. This is quite rare, so you might be better off finding mines to farm iron ore. The stronger the boulder is, the better the mining equipment you will require
