Before you can go ahead and start collecting Clay, you need to craft a simple Stone Pickaxe. This can be crafted very early in the game with a few materials. Once you have the stone pickaxe, pull up your map and navigate to the nearest water body. It doesn’t matter whether it is a pond, lake, or a stream. Once you reach it, check around for Clay nodes.
Clay nodes are a dark brown to almost black color with a sheen on them. They can be spotted near the shoreline of said water body. To harvest Clay, just use your pickaxe and mine away. For each node, you can harvest around 3x to 5x Clay. This is probably the earliest and easiest way to gather clay. The stronger your pickaxe is, the faster it will be to harvest Clay
