You need to craft a certain equipment to help you catch fireflies. To catch fireflies, you require the Bug Net. This item can be crafted quite early in the game, and all you need is Branch x3 and Thick Rope x10. You can collect branches by scavenging the ground or chopping down small trees. Thick Rope can be crafted after you have collected some vine. You require 3x Vine to craft one Thick Rope, and this can be crafted by hand. Once you have all the materials, craft the bug net then wait for nightfall to find Fireflies. 

You have to roam the lands at night to locate Fireflies. They can be found near water bodies, so check your map for the nearest lake, river, or pond. After reaching the designated area, look around for a bright gathering of fireflies, they are hard to miss in the dark. Once you find them, crouch down low and sneak up to them, then when you get close equip the bug net and press the attack key. You can capture fireflies this way and craft a makeshift lantern to use at night
