While you can craft various objects using the crafting tab, you will need special equipment for crafting metal items. Before you can craft ingots, you need a furnace. If you don’t have a furnace unlocked yet, you can easily get it early in the game by unlocking the Cavern and mining a bit. After that, talk to Pablo the Blacksmith to receive the Furnace blueprint.
To craft a Furnace, you need to hit the crafting tab on your menu and select it. You will need 40 Stone and 20 Bronze Ore, and you can easily find them both while scavenging around the Cavern. After building and placing the Furnace, click on it to place 5 ores and 1 coal to get a metal bar. Now, take out 5 gold ores and one coal, and place it in the furnace. You can purchase gold ores from Rafael the Blacksmith, and you can get coals by placing coals in the kiln or by breaking rocks. The end result will be ingots which you can use to upgrade your tools.
