You don’t have to progress too far into the game to get the fishing rod, as you need to complete the Visit the Beach Shack quest. You can get this quest during Spring Day 3 in Year 1, right after the Starting Out and Sweet Home quests. Once you complete the above two quests, head back to your home and take a look at the mailbox to get the Visit the Beach Shack quests. Now visit the Beach Shack and talk to Sunny and Elanor, two resident NPCs. If you tell them you are interested in fishing, they will hand over the fishing rod.
Once you get your fishing pole, head over to the beach to start fishing. First, equip the fishing rod, then hold down the left mouse button. A meter will pop up, and the more you hold down the button, the further you can cast the line. After casting the line, you have to wait for the fish to catch the bait. There is no fixed time for when they do come, so you have to wait for a while till you can catch some fish. You will know when the fish arrives using the shadow under the water. It will quickly grab onto the line.
Now another meter will appear, where the fish icon will be swimming to the end of the meter. Once it reaches the end, you have successfully caught it. While reeling in the fish, you would notice two wave-like lines on the top and bottom of the meter. This is your line’s health, and when the wave pattern reaches the ends of the meter, the line will snap. To counter this, you need to just tap and release the reel button quickly, or just stay still and not reel the fish in for a while. After the wavy lines disappear, quickly try to reel in your fish. If you stay too still, the fish might get away, so tapping and releasing the reel button in regular intervals is far safer to catch your fish.
