Dig a hole in the earth using your shovel. This soil will remain in your shovel till a later date. Then, equip any fruit and drop it into the hole. You may drop one piece of fruit at a time by pressing Q. Equip the shovel once more and bury the fruit with the soil already in it. The fruit must be placed in the hole and covered with earth to grow.
Buried fruit has a chance to sprout into a new plant, allowing you to establish a garden before unlocking farming. Plants cultivated in this manner will not contribute to agricultural milestones.
