FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0’s source code was recently rolled out by the American fabless semiconductor manufacturer, AMD. The new iteration of the temporal upscaling technology has still not been introduced in a bunch of games. Several mods have been released that allow FSR 2.0 to be used in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Dying Light 2. It was recently discovered that the mod works with other games like Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition.
Recently Reddit user u/muddymind tinkered with the code of FSR 2.0 to alter its functionality. The edited code can be seen as equivalent to Nvidia’s Deep-Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA). This technique does not use images rendered at a lower resolution unlike Nvidia’s Deep-Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD’s FSR. Instead, it uses images rendered at the native resolution and produces the most anti-aliased version of it on the display. You can call it equivalent to Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) used by several modern games.
Muddymind’s mod works like a charm. He only modified a single line of the Dying Light FSR 2.0 mod’s code and it is capable of producing images sharper than what TAA is capable of. The mod was tested in Metro Exodus. It successfully produced cleaner images with lesser artifacts and jagged edges, unlike FSR 2.0 and TAA. The modder has named the tweaked version of the code “FSRAA”, which stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution Anti-Aliasing.
Check out how FSRAA performs when compared to DLSS 2.4.3 Quality, FSR 2.0 Quality, and TAA using the links below.

AMD is yet to officially launch any form of temporal anti-aliasing tech. This development might catalyze the company’s interest in this domain. Although the audience for this technology will be extremely niche, like DLAA, the results will be interesting to look out for.
