In Valheim 1.0, the Curious and Mysterious Axe Heads are rare components that one needs for crafting their Early Axes. Both kinds of Axe Heads can be found in hidden chests in certain variants of the Abandoned House located in the Meadows. Knowing which structures to look for makes the search much easier.

Where to Find the Axe Heads

The two axe heads come from different types of Abandoned Houses, so you need to search for both structures.

Curious Axe Head

Various chests inside the Abandoned House may contain this Curious Axe Head. This is Abandoned House Variant 6.

During the search in the Meadows area, you should look for the ruined tower-style structure. The building itself is not guaranteed to contain the axe head, so you may need to check multiple examples before finding one.

Mysterious Axe Head

The Mysterious Axe Head, however, is located inside the chest of an Abandoned House that is medium-sized and A-shaped. This is Abandoned House Variant 2. Like with the Curious Axe Head, finding the correct house does not guarantee that the chest will contain the Axe Head. You have to check various Meadows ruins.

Every Meadows region in your world may generate these structures. If you are looking for an existing world, focus on unvisited Meadows locations, since the contents of the chests are determined when the structure is first loaded.

Console Command

If you don’t want to look around for the mysterious and curious axe heads, you can also input the following command into the console bar.

  • AxeHead1 – Curious Axe Head
  • AxeHead2 – Mysterious Axe Head

What to Do With the Axe Heads

After obtaining one of each type of Axe Head, you can combine the two rare materials into the Early Axes. To do this, you will need:

  • Curious Axe Head ×1
  • Mysterious Axe Head ×1
  • Wood ×4
  • Level 1 Workbench

Go back to the covered Workbench with the required materials in your inventory and craft the Early Axes. The two Axe Heads are consumed during the crafting process.

The Early Axes can then be upgraded with only Wood and Leather Scraps at higher-level Workbenches.

How to Get Wood

To get Wood, you need a Bronze Axe, as the Stone Axe cannot cut the required trees. Find a Birch tree in the Meadows and chop it down with the Bronze Axe. The tree will drop Fine Wood as you cut it.

How to Get Leather Scraps

Leather Scraps are obtained by defeating Boars. Look for Boars in the starter areas, then kill them to make them drop Leather Scraps.

You only need to find the Curious and Mysterious Axe Heads once for the base weapon. After that, its upgrades use Wood and Leather Scraps.

How to Use the Early Axes

Early Axes are great for early game only, as they help protect your character and also can be used to cut down some of the harder trees in the game. Early Axes are compatible with the Oak and Birch trees that you find later on, helping you get Finewood rather early. Plus, you can learn new combat moves with it like lunging slash attacks.
