People are very confused when they are deciding to buy a Monitor. The resolution is the most confusing part of buying a Monitor nowadays because we have so many different configurations, The most popular ones being 1080p [Full HD], 1440p [Quad HD] & 2160p [Ultra HD]. Let’s decode which resolution is the best for you and why?

Which one to choose between 1080p vs 1440p vs 2160p and why?

The 1080p resolution denotes 1920 by 1080 pixels which gives you a total of 2,073,600 pixels. The 1080p resolution denotes 2560 by 1440 pixels to offer a complete of 3,686,400 pixels. The most basic difference between these two resolutions is that 1440p has 1.25 times more pixels than 1080p.

But 4K is in a totally different league though. This resolution is 3840 by 2160 pixels to give you a whopping total of 8,294,400 pixels by itself because it is about four times the pixel density of 1080p and 2.25 times the number of pixels compared to 1440p.

You will find that many different factors come into play, such as your budget and what you are going to use the monitor for, whenever choosing between 1080p, 1440p, and 4K quality.

Each resolution comes with its positives and negatives. More pixels don’t always mean a better experience; more resolution also means that your monitor will need more power to work and also if your computer can handle that much power or not.

Here are a few things you can keep in mind before purchasing:

1. Screen Size and Pixel Density

A 27″ 1440p monitor with a pixel density of 108PPI, which, when compared to a 1080p monitor of similar size with a PPI of 81, clearly the 27” 1440p will have a better image quality. But 4K at 27 inches would give you a pixel density of 163PPI, which will have even more details but it’s actually pointless as the 27” size won’t be able to take full advantage of the 4K resolution.

So, Anything below 27” can be 1080p, starting from 27” and above, 1440p is the sweet spot. But if you want to get a 4K display, then go with something with a screen size of 32” and above, that would be ideal for 4K.

2. Refresh Rate

If you absolutely need a higher refresh rate display then 144Hz is the sweet spot. So, you can get a 27” 1440p 144Hz display and you won’t be disappointed.

3. What is your budget?

Your financial situation is the biggest deciding factor when picking between 1080p, 1440p, or 4K displays.

You pay to get the best possible value from your products. So, I would suggest getting a 4K panel if you’re planning to get a TV,  however, if your goal is to buy a monitor for your computer, then I would suggest at least going with a 1440p panel.

Likewise, make sure that your graphics card and power supply are sufficient enough to push that resolution, or else your computer will bottleneck.

You can use this guide to make your decision a little easier when you want to buy a new display.
