Tower of Fantasy is a recently released free open-world action MMORPG that’s being called the “Genshin Killer” despite obvious differences between the games that disprove that title. Tower of Fantasy is far from reaching the levels of fame and quality Genshin Impact has but there are some things it does that Genshin doesn’t.
The Competition or Co-Op Mode
It doesn’t necessarily compete with Genshin but it does fill a hole in the market that Genshin was expected to fill but which it didn’t. When Genshin Impact’s trailers came out, many players thought the co-op mode meant that the game would be an MMORPG and so they were looking forward to exploring the beautiful landscapes and fighting monsters together with their online friends.
Genshin Impact, however, is a single-player RPG and while that was a bummer, players still flocked in numbers due to its unique anime artstyle in scenery and character design. Soon they were hooked by its element system, combat mechanics, music, gripping story and plot. Tower of Fantasy doesn’t match Genshin in those aspects but what it does do exceptionally well is the multiplayer aspect of it.
What Sets Tower of Fantasy Apart
Tower of Fantasy is free like Genshin and it draws obvious inspiration from Genshin for its artstyle, scenery, character and character animation. And the fact that it does all that and maintains that quality throughout while still hosting thousands of players on each of its servers is what sets it apart from Genshin. Obviously, the animation and character design aren’t as good as Genshin and the character animations are sometimes clunky and awkward but the rest of the game still has decent animation and combat quality considering it’s hosting that many players in one server and making it all seamless.
In Tower of Fantasy, you can play and explore the world with your friends or simply just join random players in whatever they are doing. You can team up to fight bosses and even have official in-game teams and guilds whom you can build a community with. In the endgame, your team can challenge difficult domains or fight difficult bosses and so on.
The story is day-locked so it is drip fed to us periodically each day to ensure players don’t burn through all their content too fast and end up bored. If you’re bored fighting bosses and doing domains with your friends you can even challenge them to some friendly PvP which is also well developed in this game. This game can be enjoyed together with all of your online friends, unlike Genshin where you can add only 3 other players into your world and even so the things you can do together are limited.
There’s a feeling of togetherness in Tower of Fantasy that Genshin cannot fill. The flexible and detailed character customization options also add to this as every player can join a world as their own unique character. This is what Tower of Fantasy has that Genshin Impact doesn’t and will perhaps never have.
