The Palworld 1.0 version has added a new feature called Mutation Breeding, which allows the players to produce Mutation Pals instead of common offspring. Although mutations are not very common, they come integrated with various guarantees which makes them one of the main advantages in the final stages of the game. Mutation Pals have stronger stats, extra benefits like exclusive passive skills to built-in condensation and Alpha status, making them well worth the effort if you’re looking to build the strongest possible team.
What Are Mutations in Palworld?

Mutations are a particular breeding outcome where a breeding pair is able to produce a Mutated Egg instead of a standard egg. Once it is hatched, the egg will produce a Mutation Pal, which is an upgraded version of the normal breeding outcome and comes with various guaranteed bonuses.
As opposed to regular Pals, Mutation Pals hatch with overall better attributes. They will always be Alpha Pals, will possess IVs within a range of 90-100, will have two levels of condensation, and will learn one primary active skill based on the element they belong to. Moreover, each Mutation Pal will have two Rainbow Passives.
Mutation Chance and Cakes
Mutation breeding is based on pure luck, although picking the right cake can certainly help. Testing with 1,000 Regular Cakes resulted in 7 mutations so it could be estimated that the mutation rate is about 0.7%, with a possible range between 0.5% and 1%. This higher number has been obtained by testing 1,800 Mutation Cakes with 57 mutations, raising the estimate for the mutation rate to just over 3%.
Thus, while no mutations are guaranteed in the process, the special cakes definitely increase your chances of obtaining a Mutated Egg compared to Regular Cakes.
Mutation Rewards

With each mutation, a defined set of rewards is available that enhances the abilities of the Pals making them stronger than their counterparts.
Each of the Pals that has undergone mutation will receive two rainbow passive abilities. The first of them is drawn from a certain pool of abilities, which includes abilities such as Babysitter Idiosyncratic, Immortality, Heavy Armored, and Sky Marcher. This ability can also be received through catching Pals.
The second passive will always be taken from the standard Rainbow Passive pool, including passive abilities such as Demon God, Eternal Engine, Diamond Body, and Lavish Hospitality. However, specific passives like Siren of the Void, Savior, and Invader, which cannot be rolled through mutations, can never be obtained through the catching process. Parent passives can still be inherited, meaning passives such as Legend can appear alongside a mutation.
Each Rainbow Passive offers its own benefits:
- Babysitter increases breeding efficiency by improving egg production and incubation speed.
- Idiosyncratic restores health for both the Pal and its trainer, improving survivability during difficult encounters.
- Immortality provides powerful health regeneration while also improving offensive performance during combat.
- Heavily Armored greatly boosts defensive capability and grants immunity to explosion damage.
- Sky Marcher enhances exploration by providing additional mobility for mounts while protecting against poison and burn effects.
Beyond passive skills, every Mutation Pal is guaranteed to hatch as an Alpha Pal, starts with two-star condensation already applied, receives 90 to 100 IVs, and learns one high-tier active skill based on its primary element. The exact move varies between individuals, but it is always selected from the strongest skills available for that elemental type.
How Mutation Breeding Works
Regular breeding uses the internal breeding values of both parents to determine their offspring. Mutation in breeding will change this process into producing a Pal with a higher internal breeding value than the normal result.
For example, breeding two Anubis normally produces another Anubis, but with mutations, it produces Nitemary, which has a higher internal breeding value. This means breeding weaker Pals can yield higher tier Pals, which would need chain breeding to get.
The specific Mutation Pal may vary, but mutations always yield an improved result rather than random Pals.
Mutation Cakes
Palworld 1.0 introduced several new cakes that can make mutation breeding much more efficient. While mutations are still based on chance, choosing the right cake can either increase the likelihood of getting a Mutated Egg or improve the quality of the offspring you hatch.
- The Extravagant Vegetable Cake is the best choice for mutation breeding, as it directly increases the chance of producing mutated offspring while also improving the odds of higher stat growth. If you’re aiming for the strongest possible Mutation Pals, this should be your go-to cake. To make it, you will require:
- Cotton Candy x 8
- Flour x 12
- Potato x 10
- Carrot x 8
- Onion x 6
- The Vegetable Cake doesn’t directly boost mutation rates, but it produces two Pal Eggs per breeding cycle instead of one. Since each egg has its own chance to mutate, this effectively doubles the number of mutation attempts over time.
- The Mushroom Cake slightly increases the chances of newly hatched Pals having higher stats, making it useful for breeding stronger offspring even if a mutation doesn’t occur. Meanwhile, the Special Cake increases the likelihood of inheriting multiple passive skills from the parents, making it ideal for perfecting a breeding pair before chasing mutations.
- Special Cakes are a great pick to increase the passive skill pool for the offspring. Feeding the parents Special Cakes will ensure the offspring has multiple passives.
Mutation Limits
There are a few issues connected to mutation breeding. The most powerful creatures in the game such as Tower Boss creatures were removed from mutation breeding, thus making it impossible for them to mutate into stronger individuals of the same type.
For example, if two Bellanoir Libero are bred, the results would always generate Azidarm as it is impossible to get a better version. If two Frostallion are bred, there exist two possible outcomes: either Eidrolon Ignis or Azidarm, both being an improvement.
Mutation does not allow for breeding outcomes to jump between multiple tiers, rather it shows improvement within a limited range. In particular, breeding Selyne has been shown to produce exclusively Jormuntide Ignis and Knocklem Ignis, with no appearance of Eidrolon Ignis in this case. Also, low-tier creatures such as Lamball would never produce any higher-tier creature through mutation.
Other Breeding Changes
Palworld 1.0 also rebalanced breeding combinations, so some older breeding charts may no longer be accurate. Active skills are now inherited randomly from the parents’ three equipped skill slots, while egg incubation times in newly created Normal and Hard worlds have been reduced by roughly half. The new Awakening system also pairs well with Mutation Pals, allowing you to further enhance their already improved stats.
