The Chiaroscuro quest is the third significant chapter of the Brushes with Death DLC and represents a shift both tonally and in stakes. Following Man Proposes, this quest is an amalgam of investigation, exploration, and puzzle-solving in a gothic, creepy atmosphere, which the DLC heavily invests in. Completing Chiaroscuro unlocks Portrait in Red, and it is required for a number of the missable achievements later in the DLC.
How to Complete the Chiaroscuro Quest?

You will need to complete Man Proposes (do ensure that you also reforge the Madman’s Sword and do the optional trophy path if you’re undertaking 100%) and speak with Voyta once more in Trosky Castle, in the northeast corner of the map.
Voyta will then work on his final and most unsettling painting. He needs one last component: a Basilisk egg—a fantasy creature in a realism game. But as Kingdom Come fans know, the DLC blurs the lines between madness, myth, and reality.
Investigate the Strange Symbol
After speaking with Voyta, your first objective is to explore an odd spiral symbol in his camp. This will trigger a short cutscene in which Voyta explains the symbol’s connection to a little-noted death cult that was allegedly operating in the region some centuries previous. The quest at this point is more investigative than combat-based, with a series of clue-based objectives. Keep your torch, lockpicks, and high Perception skill on hand.
Follow the Cult Clues Across Bohemia

Voyta places several marks on your map. You’ll have to visit all of them to find the path to the Basilisk egg.
- Rock Formation south of Vraník: Visit the hills southeast of Vraník and look for a tree stump bearing the spiral sign. Take a closer look at the stump to find a piece of parchment hidden within it. It contains a cypher riddle that will guide you to your next destination.
- Old Quarry north of Ledetchko: Visit the destroyed quarry northwest of Ledetchko. Inside one of the caves, there are additional spiral etchings and chalk marks on the wall. Behind a pile of trash is a hidden compartment with a note, reading “death born of stone and flame.”
- Burned Chapel by Skalitz: Your final clue leads you to a burned chapel northwest of Skalitz. Upon entering, you’ll find a group of cult zealots praying within.
You can tackle the problem in three ways, the first of which is sneaking past them (high Stealth). You can also negotiate via words or charm. Finally, you can battle them, but this will lower your reputation and might shut down a peaceful solution down the line.
Inside the altar is a final note with map coordinates jotted down in charcoal. It leads you to the Sasau River cliffs.
Retrieve the Basilisk Egg

Now it’s time to assemble the clues. Head to the cliffs east of Sasau, by a designated cave entrance. Here’s where the last challenge lies. You can expect some traps, such as pressure plates, tripwires, and spike pits, inside.
Two bandits are going around the cave, and they’re tough but not elites, so you can try arrows or sneaking if you don’t want to have a noisy battle. Way in the back of the cave, in a rock nest, is the Basilisk egg. It may be the egg of some massive bird or reptile, but its mythic value is what Voyta wants.
Return to Voyta at Trosky Castle
Make your way back to Trosky Castle and talk to Voyta. He’ll pilfer the Basilisk egg and explain that this final piece will complete the portrait he’s worked obsessively on. The conversation turns ominous, hinting that the portrait is connected to past tragedy—and perhaps the cult too. This conversation sets up the next quest, Portrait in Red, where your choices begin to have severe consequences.
