You will need stronger gear to take down stronger enemies, and to get such gear you will have to kill enemies as well. Once you have your preferred gear, you might want to upgrade them. To do this, you will have to visit Blacksmiths. Blacksmiths can be found throughout the map, but you will only encounter them a bit later into the game. Blacksmiths not only help in upgrading weapons and armor, but also turning them into scraps.
You will meet Korrin the Blacksmith when you travel through Wortham, and he will be the first Blacksmith you will come across. Talking to him will unlock the option to salvage your equipment. Keep progressing till you get to Guard’s Watch, where you can find Paulie the Blacksmith, and interacting with him will unlock the upgrading option. You will get your first rare piece of equipment from Captain Azir, and you can choose to upgrade it at the Blacksmiths. You can check the upgrade cost and the materials required while interacting with the Blacksmith, and each type of upgrade will require a certain amount of gold and scrap materials. Each item type will give you different scrap materials, so if you want a powerful gear, you will need to salvage equally powerful items to get the scraps to use.
