To unlock local co-op multiplayer, you will have to progress through the game a bit till you reach chapter 4. There is a mission in the chapter that goes by different names, depending on the House you chose. You have to participate in either “The Shadows of Adrestia” or “To War!” challenges. The screen will then split up into two halves, where you can invite another player to take part with you.
As mentioned earlier, not every level will permit co-op gameplay, but you can tell which map permits it. To know when you can invite another player, during the battle preparation phase, check the top right corner of the screen. If there is an indication saying P2 can join, then you can invite another player to join you in battle.
To make your friends join your game or you to join theirs, just press the minus button in whichever controller is not the host. Your Switch controllers should be synced first before you can do this. If you are successful, you will notice a P2 Joined tag on the screen. You can then continue with your usual pre-battle tactics in your screens.
So far there is no option for online multiplayer, but if the feature gets implemented in the future, then there is a wide scope to improve the gameplay.
