Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction is the type of zombie shooter where you need more than just point-and-shoot skills, but team coordination, map awareness and intelligence collection. You can tweak the difficulty in the game settings to suit your skill level, because as you gain experience and get better at the game, you may want to embark into more challenging territory. We’ll show you how to unlock and change the difficulty settings in this guide.
How to Switch to Harder Difficulty in Rainbow Six Extraction
The game begins with Moderate and Cautious challenges and you’ll need to increase your React Milestone levels to unlock the higher challenges. Upon reaching Development Milestone 7, the player will unlock the Severe difficulty, and upon reaching Development Milestone 11, the player will unlock the Critical difficulty. You can do this by earning experience points from finishing quests and killing enemies.
How to Change Difficulty in Rainbow Six Extraction
When you’re setting up a new mission, you will have the option to choose from these ‘Threat Level’ options that you have unlocked. You can select the location you want to play your mission in and choose the landing zone you want to begin on the next screen.

The screen is shown to you with details of the ‘Threat Level’ screen, which are Moderate, Cautious, Severe, and Critical. These are described below.
- Moderate challenges will have Operators level 1-3, few Low-Level Archaeans, and no Parasite Mutations.
- Cautious challenges will have Operators Level: 3+, a moderate number of Low-Level Archaeans, a Parasite Mutation Risk of 50%, and a +50% Objective XP.
- Severe challenges will have Operators Level: 6+, Full Archaean Ecosystem, a Parasite Mutation Risk of 100%, and a +100% Objective XP.
- Critical challenges will have Operators Level: 8+, a Full Archaean Ecosystem, a Parasite Mutation Risk of 100%, and a +200% Objective XP.
Thus the higher the difficulty you pick, the higher rewards and bigger bonus you will receive. It’s a good idea to be familiar with all the Operators before moving on to the higher-level ones as you can fall back on them when you need to. Remember that you cannot change the difficulty once you’ve started a mission, so you’ll need to end the current one.
