You will be needing some source of light while navigating deeper areas in Elden Ring like dungeons, tunnels, and mines, and also you will be needing light while traveling through the night. Torches and lanterns are the only way to illuminate the area you walk on. Torches also help you spot enemies who would otherwise be hidden in the darkness. The best part is, that it can also be used as a weapon, and can inflict burn damage on enemies who are weak against fire.
To buy a torch, you can get it early in the game by visiting Kale the Merchant in the Church of Elleh. If you have 200 Runes, you can get the torch from him. If you want to buy the lantern as well, you will have to progress a bit further into the game to get yourself one. Head over to Weeping Peninsula which is located south of Limgrave, then keep heading towards the southwest corner to find the Isolated Merchant. You can buy the lantern for 1,800 Runes.
To equip the torch, go to the inventory menu and click on equipment, then select any of the armament slots for either right or left hand. Then select the torch and press confirm. Equipping the lantern has the same process, but can be placed on the quick items slot for easy retrieval. The lantern will be placed on your armor, so you are free to wield your weapon or shield, but it provides lesser illumination than the torch.
