The Disconnected from Steam error is a persistent error for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 but has not been acknowledged officially for a fix. There are a few things you can try to ease the issue if it does come up.
Verify Game Files
You can try to verify the integrity of the game files to weed out any corrupted or missing files. To do this, head over to the Steam launcher, go to the Library and right-click on MW2/ Warzone 2. Click on Properties > Local Files > Verify game files.
Check Internet Connectivity
If you suspect your network is causing issues, you can try to change networks or restart your router. You can even switch to an Ethernet cable or use a Mobile Hotspot to see if it helps. One player found that using a PCIe WiFi Card helped solve the issue.
Use VPN
You can try to enable VPN to bypass the Disconnected from Steam error. If you are already using a VPN and still experiencing the error, you can try to disable it instead.
Whitelist on Firewall/ Antivirus
You should check your Firewall or Antivirus whitelist to know if Steam is on it. Otherwise, the application can hinder how the launcher runs. You can also try to disable Firewall/ Antivirus to see if it helps.
Clear Cache
You can try to clear the Steam cache by opening the Run command and type in %localappdata%. In the new window, find the Activision folder, and inside find the Call of Duty folder. Delete it, then start up the game again.
Disable On-Demand Texture Streaming
Disabling the On-Demand Texture Streaming seems to help some players bypass the Disconnected from Steam error for MW2/ Warzone 2. To do this, head into the in-game settings > Graphics > Quality > Disable Texture Streaming.
Check Server Status
If the game servers are down, you will get an error and cannot log in for a certain amount of time. You can check the Call of Duty Twitter page or the official website to know if the servers are up and running again.
Shift to Batte.net
Only Warzone 2 players can shift to Battle.net to bypass the Steam error. This only works if you only have Warzone 2 and not MW2/ Warzone 2.
Toggle Activision Authenticator
One player found that a fix that worked for them was to unlink everything from the Activision website, turn off the Activision Authenticator, and then turn it back on again. Relink all the accounts and then go back and load the game. After that, enable the Authenticator from the Call of Duty website, under the game settings menu.
Run as Admin
Find the Steam file in your local directory, right-click it, and select the Run as Admin option. This might work for some but not for all, and it is mostly a temporary fix. You can also do the same for the Call of Duty MW2/ Warzone 2 files.
Update Windows and Graphics Drivers.
If your Windows is up to date, you will face issues while trying to launch the game. To update Windows, click on Start > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update. Select the Check for Updates option. For updating your Graphic Drivers, head over to your Device Managers and right-click on the Driver currently in use. You can find the Device Manager by typing it into the Windows search bar. After you right-click on the Graphics Driver, select the Search Automatically option, then select any update that comes up.
Configure your DNS Server
One more method that will help you to solve the problem. Many users claim that they got their issues resolved by this method. Sometime the error may be from your side. The issue can be resolved by configuring DNS setting as shown below.
- Go to your Network connection settings
- Right-click on the wifi or ethernet you’re connected with.
- Click on Properties at the bottom of the new window.
- Find IPv4 or IPv6.
- Click on them and go to properties.
- There will be an automatically selected DNS Server.
- Change it to ‘Use the following.
- Change the DNS server to google’s DNS server which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as shown in the picture.
- or You can search for your best DNS server for your region or track cloud flare which is 1.1.1.1 and alternate is 1.0.0.1.
- Once done, restart your computer.
- Restart your steam and check it.
Disable Background Applications & Overlays
It is strongly recommended that you ensure the MW2 is operating with appropriate RAM and CPU use. The game demands the greatest assets from all of your PC’s primary components, therefore having them focused on another work in the background may result in the program not crashing.
Although this shouldn’t be an issue if you’re running the game with more than 16 GB of RAM, if you’re on the other end of the stick, it’s recommended that you enter the Task Manager by hitting the Shift + CTRL + Esc keys simultaneously. After that clear or end unwanted tasks from the list. Now launch Modern warfare 2 again and check it.
Using Command Prompts
This method was suggested by some professional gamers and programmers to fix this issue. You just have to run some commands on your device to get the issue fix. This method only fixes the issue if it is from your device side
- Open the window command prompt and run the following commands
- ipconfig/flushdns
- ipconfig /release
- ipconfig /renew netsh
- Winsock reset
- netsh int IP reset
It will clear any old DNS cache data kept on your computer, as well as restore some functionality to its old state. After you’ve copied and pasted everything, you’ll be required to restart the system.
Reinstall Steam
If none of the above tips work, you can try to uninstall and reinstall the Steam launcher. You can also try to uninstall and reinstall MW2/ Warzone 2. If that doesn’t work, then it is best to contact the support team and have the issue fixed.
