Bugs and crashes are part of every game no matter how big or small, it can be an issue with the game patch, it can be a software conflict, or simply bad drivers. I will cover all the possible game freezing/crashing scenarios and will explain how to troubleshoot this problem.
Since the launch of the Witch queen expansion, crashes and freezes became more common than before and were reported by lots of players, some more than others. Some would experience random crashes, while for others, the game would freeze or crash on a particular screen.
Freezing/Crashing Scenarios in Destiny 2
There are two scenarios that are most reported by the players.
- First is freezing on startup or the character selection screen.
- The second scenario is random crashes while loading into any activity or during an activity
These crashes can be annoying, especially in the second scenario, as your game crashes while you load into an activity with a fireteam, getting a fireteam at times can be hard, and more so getting through difficult encounters and after all that, your game crashes before you get the rewards, can be infuriating, to say the least as you don’t even have the option to resume and have to start from scratch.
How to Fix Destiny 2 Freezing and Crashing
The solution to these crashes may not be the same for everybody as it depends on various factors. Like I previously said there can be a lot of reasons for crashes, you need to diagnose your system and see what went wrong when the game crashed using the event log.
These are some of the fixes that you may wanna try:
Switching Game ready drivers to Studio drivers
This option is only applicable for Nvidia users(for the rest, move on to the next point, it doesn’t matter if you have a GTX or an RTX card, try out this option and check the results
Closing all background apps
Software like MSI afterburner and Wallpaper Engine can conflict with applications using direct3d and can crash your game, Msi afterburner is notorious when it comes to crashing games made in unreal engine. So close any background application especially ones with overlays. Even though Destiny 2 is not made in Unreal Engine, it is worth a shot
Putting games on High priority
Games can crash when your system runs out of memory and terminates the process to save resources for the critical system processes. Putting your games on high priority will save it to some extent. This only applies to people with low RAM, if you have 16gigs or more, you need not worry about it.
Granting Administrator privileges
This is self-explanatory as windows can limit certain features of game clients like steam, origin, etc. Granting admin rights will remove that limitation
Disable Cpu or Gpu overclocks
Overclocks can make hardware unstable and some applications might act up or windows might straight up deny access, so reset any overclocks you have made.
These are some of the most working solutions discovered by different users and myself included, feel free to try any of these as none of these options can harm your system in any way.
