The three houses in the game are as follows:
- Black Eagles
- Blue Lions
- Golden Deer
The narrative will differ based on which house you pick, but you should ideally choose one that resonates with you, or that you are the most interested in. The main differences are that you will receive a different starting cast of characters for each house, which means that you won’t be able to pick from the other houses. If you already have a character or playing style in mind it’s a good idea to pick based on them.
Here are the three houses along with their general composition so that you can choose for yourself:
Black Eagles
The Black Eagles will follow the Scarlet Blaze Route. This is a house that focuses on magic, and is home to one of the best defensive units in the game—Edelgard. You will be able to use this Armored Lord class character as a tank in battles, while the other members of the clan use powerful magic and ranged attacks.
Blue Lions
Choosing this house will have you follow the Azure Gleam Route. You can choose from physical characters who have extremely high damage output in the game as well as lance throws, in the form of the character Dimitri of the High Lord class. Note that you do not have a lot of ranged attackers in this house.
Golden Deer
Picking this house will have you follow the Golden Wildfire Route, where you will have a lot of archers with abilities that you can pick from. One of the characters called Claude is of the Wyvern Master Class and can use a bow while riding one of those creatures. There are some great close-range attackers on the team as well.
You can also have another playthrough of the game after you have completed it for the first time using one of these houses, so don’t worry about the decision too much. There is no correct answer. All you have to do is make the house that you have picked as strong as it can be.
