It sets up the background of your interaction with the Keepers and introduces you to the undead—and the secrets they keep.

If you’d like to get done with this quest and know what’s actually taking place in the crypts of Avalon, read on.

Margh’s Location

After speaking with Fearghas at the Keepers’ camp, he’ll task you with investigating an undead outbreak. He directs you to find Margh, a Keeper scout stationed near the Forgotten Cemetery.

Head northwest from the Keepers’ stronghold. The path takes you past several bandit patrols, so be ready for a fight. Eventually, you’ll find Margh crouched near a small campfire in the ruins outside the cemetery. Speak with him to learn about the undead threat and the presence of something more sinister within the crypt.

Into the Forgotten Cemetery

When you’re ready, enter the Forgotten Cemetery. The cemetery is filled with skeletons and corpse-eating mobs, so you’ll need to fight them off while you explore it. After you’ve eliminated the surface threats, go down into the crypt, where the real mystery lies.

Inside, there is Huardoc, a remarkably happy undead caretaker to the crypt. He warns of a necromancer who has been performing evil experiments within. You can either persuade him to hand over the key to the inner sanctum or pay him 5 gold for entry.

Exploring the Crypt & Confronting Yorath

Deeper in the crypt, you will expect to encounter more resistant opposition from more formidable undead enemies, like an ugly stone statue that rises and walks. Be careful—it punches with force and can catch you off guard swiftly.

Eventually, you’ll come face-to-face with the necromancer Yorath, the man supposedly responsible for the undead problem. But the encounter takes a surprising turn. Yorath doesn’t deny his experiments, but he insists his goal is noble—he wants to find a way for the dead to serve the living without raising armies or causing harm.

Now, you’re faced with a moral choice:

  • Let Yorath live and benefit from a future spell reward.
  • Send him packing to thwart his research and fulfil your duty to the Keepers.

Combat Tips: How to Kill Yorath

If you choose to fight Yorath, get ready for a battle of wits. He’s a fierce mage who summons waves of undead minions.

  • Try to pin him down early and throw all you can in damage to conclude the fight in a rush.
  • As a ranged or squishier character, use hit-and-run and fall back behind crypt walls.
  • You can be shielded from his magical projectiles using a shield, and you can use throwing knives and arrows to take away at his safety.

Following the defeat of Yorath, loot his corpse for rewarding items, including necromancer gear, a Skull Staff, and unique spell scrolls. Make sure to also search around the study area for other alchemy components and lore items.

Honouring the Dead: Burial of Yorath’s Ashes

Before leaving, speak with Huardoc again. He feels the loss of his master and asks one final favour: to bury Yorath’s remains in the memorial crypt beyond a locked door. He’ll provide the key.

Return to Yorath’s corpse and collect his ashes, and then enter the locked door containing the tombs of previous necromancers. The final one that you will find is an open coffin. Place the ashes in the ceremonial bowl and, if desired, inscribe something on the stone plaque in honour of Yorath’s name—or leave it alone.

Huardoc, being satisfied with your largesse, falls into a deep sleep, and your quest is complete.

Wrap-Up: What to Tell Fearghas?

When you return to Fearghas, you have to decide—lie and tell him that you dispatched Yorath, or be honest. Either way, the Keepers will see the undead danger as neutralised, and the quest will be marked complete.

“Dead as Dreams” is a prime example of the moral ambiguity Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon revels in. Whether you choose mercy or death, both options drive the story forward and remind you of how, in Avalon, things aren’t always black and white.
