One of Hell is Us’ greatest assets is the way it weaves myth and history together within its world. A good example of this is the continent of Jeljin, which is replete with crypts dedicated to Phenelo Aster and her betrothed Vaahn Jehan. Each of them is part of their tragic story, from when they were still together to the betrayal and loss that befell them.
To get to the final puzzle of Jeljin, Remi must visit every monument, solve its mini-puzzle, and piece back together the inscriptions within. Once all the clues are unveiled, the final task within the main square may be completed.
The Dove Crypt
At the Dove crypt, the inscription on the door says:
“With locked eyes, Phenelo and Vaahn vow to love each other for eternity as their fathers, Lord Aster and Lord Jehan, look on.”
To unlock the door, align the statues so that the two figures on the left face right, and the two on the right face left. Inside, you’ll discover the first inscription:
“October 30th, Phenelo Aster is betrothed to Vaahn Jehan.”
The Rose Crypt
Located further from Remi’s point of entry, the Rose crypt presents another challenge. Its inscription reads:
“In a grand deception, Asterian soldiers replaced their lion crest with that of the Aargaulan star.”
Each statue here features four faces and four emblems. To solve the puzzle, rotate all three to display the Aargaulan star. Within the crypt lies the second clue:
“June 24th, Phenelo Aster and Vaahn Jehan are wed in a lavish ceremony.”
The Sword Crypt
The Sword crypt monument is the third one, and it has a more somber theme:
“So great was Phenelo’s dislike and rage for her brother and father that she could no longer look at them, as they looked upon her with disappointment.”
The solution is metaphorical—turn all three statues to the left, away from Phenelo’s family. Inside, the tale continues:
“Vaahn Jehan is murdered on his wedding day by 33 Asterian guards.”
The Horse Crypt
The final crypt, marked with the horse, has this inscription:
“It was like her brother Konrad stabbed Phenelo in the back, as she and Vaahn turned away from one another with fear.”
Here,. the two side statues should be facing outwards, with the middle statue holding the dagger facing Phenelo. In here is the last tragic note:
“Phenelo Aster mourns her husband at the Jeljin cemetery for 90 days.”
Solving the Final Puzzle
With all four of the crypts accessible, the story of Phenelo and Vaahn is finished: a betrothal, a wedding, a brutal murder, and a time of mourning that went on for months. In back of the church, the final monument requests that you use the numbers of each chapter of their life:
- Dove – 30
- Rose – 24
- Sword – 33
- Horse – 90
Plugging these figures into the game fills in the gaps, opening the final crypt and enabling you to delve further into Jeljin’s life.
