Call of Duty Warzone rolled out a new update a few days back that includes bug fixes and introduced a long-awaited weapon – the ice pickaxe. We are just a few days from the launch of the official season 3 in both Warzone and Vanguard, not to mention the upcoming Godzilla and Kong event in Warzone. But, the recent update to the game has caused issues for a lot of players and it’s possible the affected players may increase with the launch of Warzone season 3. Numerous players have reported Warzone crashing on startup with no errors after a recent update. Fortunately, there are some fixes that may be able to help you resolve the error.
Fix Call of Duty: Warzone Crashing to Desktop No Error
In the absence of an error, it becomes very difficult to root the exact cause of the Warzone crashing on the PC. But, it’s almost certain that something is wrong on your end unless the new update has really messed up the game and the crash is widespread. If there is no error and the Warzone is crashing on startup, here are some solutions you can try.
Disable All Overlays, Especially GeForce Experience Overlay
One of the first things you should do is disable the GeForce Experience overlay. Overlays cause problems in lots of games making that crash to desktop. Warzone in particular can sometimes have issues with the GeForce Overlay. Here is how to do it.
- Open GeForce Experience
- Click on the Gear icon to get into the Settings
- Locate IN-GAME OVERLAY, it’s below LANGUAGE
- Toggle it off to disable (if it’s green the overlay is enabled).
Disable Overclocking and XMP
Another reason for the crash may have to do with the overclocking that’s unstable and it’s causing the game to crash. Not all overclocking is bad, but if a game crashes at startup, it’s one of the culprits. If you have any RGB or overclocking software running, try disabling the software and test if the game works. If the game still fails to launch, you may have to disable the XMP. I know it’s a pain and you should not have to do this to play the game, but that’s one of the potential solutions if you are desperate to play. Most motherboards allow you to simply disable the XMP, but on some, you have to set manual values. If you have multiple XMP, try switching to XMP 2. You will be able to disable the XMP from the BIOS.
Disable Razor Software and Afterburner
Most of the Razor software are known to not go so well with Warzone. Sure, they work for us and a lot of other users, but a lot of players have reported that the combination of the two software running together leads to Warzone crashing with no apperent reason/error. The game goes for a bunch of RGB software and Afterburner. So, disable all these software and try to launch the game.
Disable VPN, Especially NordVPN
If you have a VPN running in the background that may be the cause of the crash. Ensure that you have disabled the VPN completely and reboot the system. When the system boots up again, check that the VPN is not set to launch on startup. We have a universal fix to disable third-party applications which is the next fix. NordVPN in particular is known to cause issues with Warzone. So, if you have the software disable it, reboot the system, and attempt to play the game. A reliable VPN that we use is ExpressVPN.
Perform a Clean Boot to Fix Warzone Crashing
The clean boot environment is great to fix the Call of Duty Warzone crashing to the desktop with no error as it addresses some critical issues. It frees the resources on your system and disables all third-party applications that may be causing issues with the game. Here is how to perform the fix.
- Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig, hit Enter
- Go to the Services tab
- Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Now, click Disable all
- Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager
- Disable one task at a time and restart the system.
Once the system boots up again, try running Warzone, and hopefully, you will be able to get into the game without any crashes.
Try Running Battle.Net and Game with Admin Permission
Another common reason the game may be crashing for you is that you have not provided admin privilege to the launcher and the game. Locate the executable of the Battle.Net and Warzone and provide admin permission. When you go to the install locations of each software look for the .exe file. Here is how to provide admin permission.
- Right-click on the .exe file and choose Properties
- Go to the Compatibility tab
- Check the box that says Run this program as an administrator
Properly install your Windows updates
The first thing that you need to do here is to update everything. This means that you have to check for updates for Warzone, and also check it for other installed applications and obviously Windows.
Outdated software may sometimes interfere with games. Regularly keep updating your applications in order to avoid unnecessary issues with compatibility.
Close all the other active and background apps
Sometimes, opening a lot of applications together can put pressure on your system especially if it’s not a powerful one.
You can use the Task Manager to quickly check which apps or services are using the most resources. Here’s how to do that:
- Open Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL).
- Under the Processes tab, check the columns for CPU, Memory, and Disk. If any of these columns are about to reach 100%, that means that your computer is working hard due to a lack of resources.
- Close any programs that you don’t need by highlighting them and by clicking on the End Task button at the bottom.
Disable V-Sync
V-Sync was developed primarily to combat screen tearing but in some games, like Modern Warfare or Warzone, turning on V-Sync may cause it to crash. Although this is not a universal issue for Warzone, it’s been reported that if you simply disable V-Sync, it can stop the crashing issue.
If you are using an NVIDIA graphics card, then you can open up the NVIDIA Control Panel application to disable V-Sync.
Repair COD Warzone game files
If your game is still crashing at this time, the next step that you can do is to repair the Call of Duty Warzone game files. You can do it by going into the Blizzard application (Battle.net). Here’s how to do that:
- Open Battle.net.
- Select Call of Duty: MW game.
- Click the gear icon in the middle of the screen to access the “Options”.
- Select Scan and Repair.
- Click Begin Scan.
These are a few of the solutions you can use to fix the crashing to desktop issue in Warzone Season 3.
