Covenants and Factions in Elden Ring
While multiplayer has been confirmed for the game, there is no official word from the devs yet on the covenants—but it is likely to have a covenant system even though it might not be called by the same name. This is based on multiplayer features which consist of cooperative, PvP gameplay like the previous game Dark Souls.

Covenants are essentially factions that players can join to participate as a team to defeat enemies together and earn massive rewards. Due to the scale of these battles, the overall gameplay experience is heightened and teamwork is an essential skill to have.
The following are the covenants that can be in Elden Ring, based on previous Souls lore. They are grouped into Co-op Covenants, PvP Covenants, and Special Covenants.
There are two types of Co-op Covenants, namely Game-Progression-Driven and Anti-Invasion. The Game-Progression-Driven Covenants are used to help the player defeat a boss or advance through a particularly difficult area in the game, while the Anti-Invasion ones let you avoid the battle entirely.
As for PvP Covenants, there are three more types in addition to the afore-mentioned Anti-Invasion type. Hunter Killers will incite players to kill as many of the other players as they can, the Punishers will deal out the penalty to sinners while the Area Defenders’ task is to let players fight other players if they cross into their area of defense.
The Special Covenants are the ones that are not involved with multiplayer games. This is usually for solo gameplay and single quests that do not need the help of teams.
