To reach Balthazar’s chamber, head upstairs once you reach Moonrise Towers and talk to Commander Z’rell. There is a persuasion check that you need to pass while talking to her. Convince her about your beliefs with the Absolute by passing the D-14 persuasion check. If successful, she will give you the keys to Balthazar’s chamber.

There is a note beside the entrance that will warn you of not touching the books in the bookshelf. There is an order you have to follow to pull the books from the shelf. 

  • There is a book on the upper right side that you should pull first. This will reveal the stone plinth beside the bookshelf
  • You need to insert something inside the altar. Hold the Alt key to find the heart
  • The heart can be hidden inside the various objects, so search around to find it
  • Once you find the heart, place it on the altar

If done correctly, the shelves will part and you can enter the next room. Over here, there is a choice to make regarding the Ritual Circle. You can ask Gale to craft the Shadow Lantern using the Broken Lantern and the Pixie Corpse. Or you can let Gale decide what he wants to do with the Ritual Circle. If you let Gale craft the Shadow Lantern, you can use it to summon a Shadow Wraith. If you let Gale do what he wants, he will destroy the circle and gain Mystra’s Benevolence buff.
