With that cleared up, we hope you are as hyped for Biomutant as we are. It offers plenty of unique experience with the addition of great visuals. If you have been failing to launch Biomutant, it’s likely the issue is due to one of the below reasons.
How to Fix Biomutant Crashing at Startup, Won’t Launch, and Not Loading
The checklist is quite extensive when it comes to rooting the cause of the Biomutant crash at startup, won’t launch, and not loading. First thing first, ensure that you meet the minimum system requirements to play the game. While the crash at startup should not occur due to not meeting the requirements, it can often lead to game getting stuck, lag, and in-game crash. Here are all the solutions you can try on the launch day.
Update the Software
Before you launch the game, ensure that the GPU driver and the operating system is updated. Also, check that you have the most recent version of the game. NVIDIA recently launched a new Game Ready Driver, ensure that you have that.
Run as administrator
Without the admin permission, the Biomutant executable may not have write permission at the install directory, which can cause the game not to launch or crash at startup. To provide admin access, go to the install directory and right-click on the game executable > Properties > Compatibility tab > check Run this program as an administrator.
Ensure correct display settings
Make sure that the DPI is set to the default 100%, the display you are using supports the resolution you set in the game and set the color depth to 32-bit.
Whitelist the game on antivirus software
In case, you are using the Windows Defender and no third-party antivirus software, you must whitelist the game in the Windows Defender. However, if you have a third-party software installed for security, whitelist the game in your respective software.
Set launch option on Steam for Windowed Mode
Running the game on fullscreen consumes more resources which can be a problem for players with low system specs. Even through the game has pretty low requirements, try setting the game to Windowed Mode. Here are the steps.
- Launch the Steam client
- Go to Libraries and locate Biomutant. Right-click on the game and select Properties
- Click on the General tab and click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS
- In the field type or paste -windowed –noborder
- Press Ok and exit
- Restart the system and check if the Biomutant crash at startup still occurs.
Terminate unnecessary applications and perform clean boot
With so many games, third-party software that forcefully inject themselves between operations cause crash in the game. Hence, the first thing we must do to resolve the Biomutant crashing on startup or failed to launch error is suspend all unnecessary programs and then launch the game. Here are the steps you can follow.
- Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig, hit Enter
- Go to the Services tab
- Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Now, click Disable all
- Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager
- Disable one task at a time and restart the system.
Try launching the game, check if the error still occurs.
Verify Integrity of Game Files
If the game itself is corrupted that could also lead to crash at startup or mid-game crash with Biomutant. Here are the steps to check and repair corrupt files on Steam.
- Launch the Steam client
- From the LIBRARY, right-click on Biomutant and select Properties
- Go to LOCAL FILES and click on VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES…
Disable Nvidia GeForce Experience Overlay
Overlays of all software have the potential of crashing games. If you have GeForce Experience installed on your system, you probably have the Overlay enabled. Disable it to solve the Biomutant crash at startup or not launching problem. Here are the steps.
- Launch GeForce Experience and go to Settings
- From the General tab, disable the In-Game Overlay
- Restart the system and play the game.
Disable MSI Afterburner and Overclock Software
MSI Afterburner causes issues with a lot of games. Therefore, you must close the MSI Afterburner from the Task Manager before you launch the game. If you do not have the software, check for other game optimization software or applications that overclock the GPU or CPU. Terminate all such applications and the Biomutant crash at startup may be resolved.
Disable Steam and Discord Overlay
If you are playing the game via Steam and have Discord running, you must disable the Overlay from both the software. It causes problems similarly to the NVidia Overlay. Here are the steps for each software.
Disable Steam Overlay
- Launch Steam client
- Click on Library and right-click on Biomutant
- Select Properties and uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
Disable Discord Overlay and Hardware Acceleration
