The Warhammer 40K: Darktide video game, developed by Fatshark, is set in the Warhammer 40K universe. It utilizes a gameplay model similar to Vermintide 2, where players team up to take out preset enemy (AI) waves. Instead of character selection screens, Darktide lets players customize their own character, so they can play as anyone they want – from fearsome veteran soldiers to spellcasters.
In Warhammer 40K: Darktide, four enemy types exist: Scabs, Dregs, Poxwalkers, and Groaners. Let’s find out more about Groaners in this guide.

What are Groaners in Warhammer 40K: Darktide?
There are four types of enemy hordes in Warhammer 40K Darktide. These are:
- Scabs
- Dregs
- Poxwalkers
- Groaners
Originally, Groaners were Poxwalkers before they became so grossly infected. They still retain some of the early stages of the infection, though they still retain some of their self-awareness. Their casual street clothing makes them easy to spot, but they lack the mindlessness of Poxwalkers along with disregard for the outfits that they exhibit. In addition, the Dreg enemies, who wear all sorts of rags, resemble a militia version of the Poxwalkers and Groaners.
Whenever you are in the Atoma Prime hub, you can check out the Meat Grinder in the Psychanium to see which enemies you have. A number of enemy types can be spawned as you level up your Trust Level, and as you test your weapons against various types of enemies, their names will be displayed. A Groaner is a rotting corpse without much protection (although some do exist). Groaners are one of Warhammer 40K: Dark Tide’s weakest enemies. If you want an easier victory, you should use weapons that inflict damage over time or incapacitate those around you.
Poxwalkers/Groaners are mentioned as being boosted by skills, but the skills don’t specify who they are talking about. Depending on the context, the term Groaner could mean many different things, while Poxwalkers are zombie-like creatures that emit plague from every orifice.
