Your companions will do more than help you in battle. They can give you quests and side quests, and also help you get stronger. While interacting with your companions, you get the option to spar them. But you cannot unlock the sparring option right away. Rather you have to raise their affinity by giving them gifts that they like first. You can see what items they like when you check out their stats in the Observe menu.
As a rule of thumb, to start collecting gifts after sparring, you need to raise their affinity to 20. Once their affinity has reached 20, you can spar with them. From the get go, your chance of getting sparring drops increases to 50% at 20 affinity. For every one additional affinity point you increase, your chance of getting a bag drop will increase by 1%. So at around 70 affinity, your chance of getting bag drops stands at 100%. As for the rewards you can get, they are random and are mostly items you gift them. Sometimes you might receive an item you have gifted them before, and this is also one way you can trade items with your companions.
