Playing a solo mage in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a very rewarding experience. Spells are not only murderous when wielded properly, but their flexibility also means that mages can adapt easily—be it killing opponents with elemental rage, playing with life energy, or calling upon spectral minions.

This guide centers on an Act 1 elemental mage build, including attribute priorities, gear slots, spell acquisition, skill ordering, and combat techniques which highlight the mage class early in the game.

Mage Build Concept: Pure Elemental Spellcaster

This build is all about leveraging elemental damage—lightning, fire, and ice—backed by status effects and summoning for strategic adaptability. The best news? All elemental spells scale from the same attributes, so you can switch between them freely.

Attributes: Spend Only on Spirituality

In Act 1, put all your attribute points into Spirituality. This raises your mana pool, spell power, and available gear. Don’t squander points on Endurance or Perception unless strictly needed by particular equipment in subsequent acts.

Suggested Mage Equipment (Act 1)

Battlemage Set

Where to Find: Tomb of the Good Druid (close to Forgotten Cemetery & Deserted Camp)

Requirements: 11 Spirituality

How to Acquire:

  • Go directly into the tomb.
  • Turn right at the split into a druidic circle with a note and corpse.
  • Proceed deeper into the dungeon until you arrive at a bedroom-like room.
  • Lockpick the chest beside the wooden chair to get the full set.

Until you reach 11 Spirituality, wear the Nobleman’s Set, which can be found on a corpse by the All-Mother’s Shrine close to the beginning beach. It’s light and good enough for early survival.

Mage Skill Progression (Levels 1–11)

Here is a step-by-step skill order for an early mage build that is strong and well-directed:

Armor Weight Management for Mages

To get three dashes and maximize your Power in Swiftness bonus, your equipment load has to stay “Light”. If fitting all the Battlemage set brings you over, go without the Battlemage Boots until you acquire:

Endurance Training – In Practicality → Armor, which raises your weight capacity without investing in Endurance.

Combat Strategy: Mage’s Way of Fighting

1. Bleed + Bonus Damage Synergy

Begin every fight by casting Blood Transfusion to apply Bleed, a status effect that procs your Exploitation of Afflictions passives. This increases all follow-up spell damage by up to 30%.

2. Follow-Up with Elemental DPS

Use Thunder Lash against groups—it’s cheap, fast, and chains between targets.Use Scorching Blaze for bosses or elites—it’s powerful but mana-intensive.

3. Summon Distractions

Cast Wolf’s Call before major fights to distract enemies. Summons don’t need to deal damage—they give you time to charge heavy spells and reposition.
