The “As Good as Gold” quest in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a good old-fashioned back-and-forth errand quest that begins fairly straightforward but adds a little twist: you’ll have to find a mysterious goldsmith without any quest marker assistance. It’s simple to end up wandering around the village speaking to every NPC, but fear not—we’ll take you directly to the correct person.

Completing this quest earns you a good amount of XP and some gold, in addition to opening up a new accessory shop, so it’s well worth the trouble.

Starting the Quest

To begin this quest, you’ll need to visit the village located just outside the Horns of the South. If you’ve already unlocked the fast travel point, it’s simply called “The Village.”

When you’re there, go into the tavern and find a female dressed in black alone—Lady Elaine. But there’s a catch: she won’t offer this quest to you unless you’ve already gotten through “The Last Voyage” quest. If so, she’ll be asking for your assistance in fixing one of her valued necklaces.

How To Find Osbryht The Blacksmith

Accept Elaine’s request, and she’ll hand over her damaged necklace. Your first stop is the fortress near the village, where you’ll find Osbryht, the blacksmith. From the fortress entrance, head up the stairs to the left—Osbryht will be working there.

Speak to him, and he’ll inform you that repairing delicate jewelry isn’t exactly within his capabilities. He advises you to try speaking with others in the village about finding someone better qualified to do the job. You’ll receive 50 XP and now possess the broken necklace.

How To Find The Goldsmith

This is where it gets a bit tricky—there is no marker here to guide you, so listen carefully.

From the Village fast travel point, go up the hill and turn right up the stairs. You’re searching for an NPC by the name of Ellis, who tends to walk around the central residential area.

After you locate him, initiate a conversation and select these dialogue options in sequence:

  • “Tell me about yourself.”
  • “What were you doing before you joined the other refugees?”
  • “Sure.”
  • “I may have work for you. Can you fix this?”

Ellis will offer to assist and fixes the necklace for free. You’ll get the Repaired Necklace and another 50 XP.

Return the Necklace to Elaine

With the necklace restored to its former glory, go back to Lady Elaine in the tavern and return it. She’ll give you 100 gold, another 50 XP, and a Letter from Lady Elaine. She now requests that you give this letter to Fearghas, who’s on guard duty at the fort.

How To Unlock Ellis’s Accessory Shop

Go to the north corner of the fort, where you can find Fearghas. Have a word with him and select the following dialogue: “Lady Elaine urges you to make Ellis the blacksmith’s apprentice.”

Fearghas will be willing to take on Ellis, and now you just have to go back to Ellis with the good news. He’ll be delighted—and better yet, he’ll finally open up his accessory shop. Now you can purchase some of the powerful trinkets and accessories from Ellis, and this is one of the more worthwhile side quests early on in the game. You’ll also gain a final 150 XP for your efforts.
