There are several character encounters during your time in Starfield. As you make progress in the game, you can pick up quests to learn more about the lore of the game. After you corner Maya in the Asteroid Mine, you can talk to her to learn more about the First and her involvement with them. The more you learn about her predicament, the easier it is for you to make a choice. Soon, you will get two options, to either learn more about the First, or attack and kill her.
If you choose to learn more about the First, Maya will hand over the encrypted slate for you to crack. Besides that there isn’t much else to do here, and you can head back to Alex Shadid to decrypt it. If you instead choose to attack her, you can loot her corpse for more than the Encrypted Slate. Besides earning 25 EXP, you can also get some rare weapons and ammo.
Since the end outcome for both choices is the same, it doesn’t matter whether you should kill or spare Maya. If you kill her, you can get more loot off her and some XP, and if you spare her, she won’t be of use later on. You can choose your path and go through with it.
