As Genshin Impact’s 5.6 update goes live, players are diving into new content in the charred new region of Natlan. Among the most eagerly awaited additions is an entirely new world boss: the Secret Source Automaton, Overseer Device. This technological terror is part of the latest chapter in Genshin’s evolving world design, blending steampunk sensibility with elemental chaos, and it has rewards to match.

Whether you’re here for the challenge or farming materials to level up the latest 5-star Escoffier, this boss is on your radar. Like other world bosses, the Overseer Device drops essential upgrade materials that you’ll want if you’re interested in entirely building some of the latest characters to be added to the roster. However, finding it for the first time may be somewhat problematic—it is not hidden in a cave or stashed in a ruin. Instead, it’s lounging on a far-off island in the corner of the map, separate from the usual fast-travel points.

Location of Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device in Genshin Impact

You can clearly identify the boss icon on the Genshin Impact map, but accessing it is where it gets tough. It’s situated on a small island near the southwest region of Natlan, just after the Atocpan area. And no, there is no bridge or pathway to the place; it’s totally isolated from the mainland.

If you have Furina in your team, then you’re in luck because you can just use her Elemental Skill and stroll across the water as if no harm will ever come to you.

If you haven’t got Furina, then there is an alternative route you can take to reach this boss:

Teleport southwest of the Children of Echoes to the waypoint.
Head towards the beach where you find a couple of Koholasaurus near the Secret Source Dragon Idol.
Use the Indwell the Saurian ability and swim over to the boss island.
Along the way, look for Phlogiston Particles. They’ll charge your Aquadash skill and get you moving faster on the water.

When you arrive, be sure to unlock the teleport waypoint nearby, as it will benefit future runs.

How to Defeat the Boss?

The Secret Source Automaton – Overseer Device isn’t just another overworld boss with a big health bar and flashy moves — it actually plays by a different set of rules compared to the other enemies you’ve fought in Natlan so far.

If you take a party with a lot of Natlanese characters, especially those in their Nightsoul State, you’re going to have a rough time. The boss seems to know these characters and will actually counterattack more fiercely when they are on the battlefield. So, instead of being an advantage, using regional characters is a slight disadvantage here. But don’t worry — there’s a workaround.

To simplify the fight, bring a Cryo character. Any unit that can reliably apply Cryo in-field will do, think Ganyu, Kaeya, Chongyun, Layla, or even Rosaria. Cryo is perfect for a straightforward reason: it interrupts the boss’s Beam attack, one of its most lethal abilities.

Freeze the Overseer Device’s attacks with Cryo-Hydro. Using them together will stun the Overseer, and you’ll have a quick couple of seconds in which actually to go all out on damage or reposition yourself. Keep watching during the fight. Once you see that the boss has started charging its beam, take that chance to hit it with some cryo to take it down.

Rewards for Defeating the Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device

Once you slay the boss, you’ll reap the usual rewards using Original Resin. The main thing that you’re farming here is the Secret Source Airflow Accumulator, which is an ascension material that Escoffier requires and potentially future characters as well. Otherwise, you’re also getting Artifacts, Mora, Friendship XP and a few functional upgrade materials.
