After liberating certain sections of the map, you can pick up side quests from the NPCs within the area. One of the NPCs you will encounter early in the game, after liberating Ernie, is Basil. You can find Basil in H2, and he will ask you to visit the bunker to retrieve the MG42. Make your way to the Old Bunker in The Rust (H3), which can be found on the north side of H3. There are tons of enemies inside and around the bunker, so defeat them all as you head to the lower floor.
Explore the lower floor of the bunker and unlock the weapon caches here. The MG42 can spawn inside one of the crates. If it is not available here, you have to defeat enemies in the area and get it as a drop. Or search for crates in other sections of the bunker. Either way, when you get the machine gun, you can give it to Basil or keep it to yourself.
