If you have played previous God of War games, you will know that Ragnarok has a lot of the same features about the special skills that you can attach to your weapons. Heavy Runic Attacks need to be unlocked first before you can begin using them. Meanwhile, the Light Runic Attacks are already unlocked for you as part of the main story mission.
To upgrade Heavy Runic Attacks, you will need to use your XP. On the weapon that you have the Heavy Runic Attack equipped, you will find the tab at the bottom. If you have enough XP, the upgrade button will light up, and you can press the Square button to upgrade this particular Heavy Runic Attack.
