Heat scarcity is a real thing in Frostpunk 2, and you can check out the red bar at the top of the screen to know how cold your city is. There are a few things you can do to decrease cold and increase the heat
Use the Generator and Increase Fuel Production
You should have a Generator placed nearby to supply a steady supply of warmth. In case you find your Generator burning up more fuel than supplying heat, then you need to increase Fuel Output. Certain builds can help generate extra Fuel to increase Fuel production for this purpose. You can find all the below buildings by heading into the Idea Tree and researching specific ideas within the Heating or Resources nodes. The Idea Tree is available after building a City Hall within your Housing District
- Coal Mines and Advanced Coal Mines
- Pumpjacks and Advanced Pumpjacks
- Geothermal Plants and Advanced Geothermal Plants
- Charcoal Plants
- Phytochemical Oil Extraction
Another way to farm Fuel is to build Extraction Districts specifically on Fuel Producing tiles. Tiles like Coal can help you generate Fuel using Extractors and connecting them to the city via Skyway or Rail
Upgrade Generators and use Overdrive
Since procuring Fuel is an important aspect while using Generators, upgrading Generators will make them utilize Fuel more efficiently. Under Idea Tree: Heating, you can find Generator Upgrades, and there are three levels of upgrades you can do. Each upgrade will not just enhance the fuel consumption, but can also change what sort of fuel these Generators can consume. If you haven’t unlocked that particular fuel resource, it is unwise to upgrade your Generator if you cannot meet its needs
Another way to increase your Generator’s output is to put it on Overdrive. The only drawback to this is that the Generator will wear out much faster, making it an unreliable option to increase Heat output
Research Ideas
Researching certain nodes under the Idea Tree can help decrease Heat demands. Below are some of the best nodes to invest in for tackling Heat Scarcity
- Passive ways to decrease Heat Scarcity
- Food Energy Efficiency – Idea Tree: Heating
- Housing Insulation – Idea Tree: Heating
- Buildings that help decrease Heat demand
- Heat Dispatcher – Idea Tree: Heating
- Heating Hubs
- Laws that can be researched and implemented
- Worker Shifts: Idea Tree: Resources – Adjusted Shifts
- Waste Heat Conversion: Idea Tree Resources – Heat Recycling
Displacing Population and Increasing Productivity
Less people in your city will mean less Heat demand, so you can displace your population and send them to places to gather fuel and other resources. Not only will your city’s heat demand be less, but you also gain production by sending your workers to farm resources. Also, you can reduce the Workforce within your city while keeping production and heat in check. You can also shut down a district if you are facing a heat crisis
Build Sufficient Housing and Shelter
You can check your Shelter Scarcity bar in the Resource Drawer to know if your population is suffering from a housing crisis. You can add more houses with Housing Districts and gain 20 Shelter. Expanding housing districts will increase Shelter to 25. Also, researching the following buildings and placing them in the appropriate districts can also help.
- Housing Block – Idea Tree: City
- Worker’s Housing – Idea Tree: City
- Housing Distribution – Idea Tree: City – Pass it as Law after research
