The only way you can defeat Automaton Tanks is to use Stratagems. If you get close to the Tanks, they will shoot a continuous barrage of bullets in your direction. There is no way to avoid it, so try to attack from a distance while you take cover. The best Stratagems to use here are higher level ones like the Orbital 380MM HE Barrage, Railgun, Eagle Cluster Bombs, Eagle 500KG Bomb, Spear, and any other ranged explosive. Also, shields will play an important role here, so always use  Ballistic Shield Backpack, Shield Generator Relay, and Shield Generator Pack for added support.

There are two types of tanks, the Annihilator Tank and the Shredder Tank. The Annihilator Tank has no weaknesses, so use Stratagems to defeat it. As for the Shredder Tank, target the vents at the back of it and use Anti-Tank Guns or Grenade Launchers to lower its health. The Orbital Railcannon Strike is ideal for defeating the Shredder Tank.
