Fix Modern Warfare 2 Error Puget-Altus ‘Unable to Access Online Services’

After an extensive early access campaign, the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer is finally out. The game is excellent if you get past the initial issues with the game, such as crashing. At the time of writing, the game has a lot of problems, but it’s expected with such a big launch. Hopefully, the devs will hammer out these issues in the coming days. An error from the beta has made its way to the final launch – the Puget-Altus error. Fortunately, there are some fixes you can apply to resolve the issue if it’s on your end. But do note that the game has just launched, and the real issue may be with the servers. The error message reads – “Connection Failed: Unable to access online services” [Reason: PUGET – ALTUS]. Are you seeing the same error message in Modern Warfare 2 and want to fix it? Check out this guide.

Update 18 Jan 23: MW2 Puget Altus

If you are getting this error, don’t worry, you are not alone. Thousands of players have this issue right now as the servers are down.

These are just some of the Tweets, but the issue seems to be with the PSN as most of the players reporting the problem are on PS5, and NBA 2k23 is also down for PS5 users as they are getting the something went wrong error.

There has been no acknowledgment from IW or Raven on the issue. If you go over to the PSN, everything is green, meaning online, which hits to a possible glitch with the PSN servers.

How to Fix Modern Warfare 2 Connection Failed Error Puget-Altus on PS4 and PS5

If you are receiving a PUGET – ALTUS connection failed error in MW2, don’t panic, as you are not the only one. Many other players are also running into the same error message. Many players are wondering if it is possible to fix this annoying error. Well, there is not a method that can work 100% on this issue, but there are some workarounds you can try to get fixed.

1. Power Cycle your Gaming Console

First, try to power-cycle your console by unplugging it, pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds, waiting for about 2 minutes, and then turning it on. Try to launch the game and see if the error has gone away.

2. Check the Status of the Servers

If there is an issue with the servers, that can also lead to the Puget-Altus error in Modern Warfare 2. Hence, if you get a connection error, it’s worth checking if the servers are down. You can go to the official Twitter handle of the game or check Downdetector for user reports.

3. Restart or Reset your Internet Router or Modem

An issue with the internet connection can also lead to an error. So, simply restart your router by turning it off, wait for about 2 to 3 minutes and then plug it back. This will reinitialize the router or modem and clear the cache. if that does not work, try resetting the router using the button at the back.

4. Use Mobile Hotspot

If there is an issue with your ISP connecting to the COD servers, you may get the Puget-Altus error; try playing the game via the internet from another ISP or your mobile internet. Once you are in the game, you can switch back to your original ISP.

5. Change the MTU Settings (PS5)

The MTU settings on both play a crucial role in determining the speed of the internet. It’s possible you do not have the right setting or value, causing speed problems with the game, hence, the Modern Warfare 2 Error Puget-Altus. We tried this trick with Vanguard, and it worked to resolve issues with the connection to the server. Here are the steps you can follow for PS5.

  • Change MTU Settings on PS5
  • Click on the Gear icon to go to Settings
  • Go to Network > Settings (While you are at the Settings, we suggest that you go to Connection Status and perform Test Internet Connection. A simple test often can resolve a bunch of connection issues.)
  • Select Set Up Internet Connection
  • Click on your registered network and choose Advanced Settings
  • Go down to MTU Settings and set it to Manual
  • Go to MTU and set the value to 1473

6. Change the DNS Servers

You can do this for both console and PC. The best server for gaming in our experience, is Google’s. The servers are primary – and secondary – Here are the steps you can follow.

  • For Xbox – press the Guide button > All Settings > Network > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS Settings > Manual > Input the Google DNS addresses and in both the primary and secondary fields and restart the console.
  • For PC – Settings > Network & Internet > Change adapter options > select the network > right-click > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties > Toggle Use the following DNS server addresses and fill the Google DNS and > Reboot the PC.
  • For PS5 – Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Manually > Wi-Fi or LAN > Under DNS Settings > Enter Primary DNS as > Enter Secondary DNS as

7. Delete Modern Warfare 2 Saved Data

If the error still occurs after trying the above fix, try to delete the MW2 save data from the PS5 settings. Deleting the saved data will impact the game’s settings, but as everything is saved on the servers, it should not be much of an issue.

8. Reinstall the Game

If the above methods are not good enough for you, you can try to uninstall the game and reinstall its fresh copy. However, the game is still in the pre-launch period, so the issue will get resolved itself when the devs fix the issue from their end.

9. Contact the Activision Support Team

Even after trying all of these methods, if the error message persists, the last resort is to reach out to the Activision customer support team, and they will assist you further.

That’s all we have now to fix Modern Warfare 2 Beta connection failed Puget-Altus error. Hopefully, one of these methods should fix the error message. Read the linked guide if you are stuck at 60 FPS while playing the game.
