How to Fix Fortnite stuck on ‘Checking for updates error

There are some workarounds you can try to fix Fortnite stuck on the ‘Checking for updates’ error:

1. Check your internet connection

“Checking for updates,” says that the game is attempting to download the latest version but something prevents it from doing it. So, first of all, make sure that your internet connection is working fine and stable. Also make sure that your PS, Xbox Switch, or PC is well connected to the internet and nothing is restricting with game’s ability to download the latest updates.

2. Turn off the Modem and Console and restart it

One of the solutions is shared by a Reddit user is that you need to turn off Modem and Console and restart it again and the issue will be resolved. However, you might need to do this method multiple times also if it doesn’t solve on the first try.

3. Try to use another internet alternative

This is another solution shared by a user on Reddit. If your game is connected to the Wi-Fi, try to switch it to the mobile hotspot OR try to connect it to your neighbor’s Wi-Fi and you won’t see the ‘Checking for updates’ error. Many players have solved this issue with this method.

4. Check the server status

In case, the above-mentioned solutions don’t work, then the issue must be from the server side. And so, the only thing you can do is wait until the devs resolve this issue as we can’t do anything in this case. You can also check the latest updates on Fortnite’s official Twitter handle where they usually update regularly about the status of the game’s servers and new update details.

5. Change DNS Settings

One of the common causes of the ‘Checking for Updates’ error is incorrect DNS server settings. To change the DNS settings on your Windows PC, follow these steps:

  • Press Win + I on your keyboard to open Windows Settings.
  • Go to Network & Internet and then Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on your connection type.
  • Click on Edit for the DNS server assignment.
  • Select Manual if it’s set to Automatic.
  • Toggle the switch on for IPv4.
  • Set the DNS addresses as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google’s public DNS servers).
  • Restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

6. Repair Fortnite

If the above steps didn’t resolve the issue, repairing the Fortnite installation might help. To repair Fortnite, follow these steps:

  • Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  • Go to your Library and locate Fortnite.
  • Click on the three dots next to the Launch button and select Verify.
  • Wait for the verification process to complete.
  • Restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

That’s all for now, To fix Fortnite is stuck on the ‘Checking for updates’ error.

Make sure your machine is booting up in “secure boot” mode. If it’s not booting in “secure boot” mode the files have not been marked as “trusted” by the Operating System. Fortnite will not see the files because they’re not trusted, and will insist it needs an update in order to get those files it doesn’t recognize installed, despite them sitting right there.

In the search bar, type “system information”. On the screen that comes up, look for “secure boot”. if it says “off” then that’s your problem. You need to go into the BIOS and enable “secure boot”. The Operating System will mark all the files as “trusted”, and Fortnight will see them and start right up after that.

      Cheers…! 😉

Alright….I’m gonna have to request you add this fix since I’ve been racking by brain over this for over 2 weeks now. I even went as far as swapping the HDD for an SSD. That wasn’t the problem and nor were any of your suggestions. No, in my case, it was an issue of my own doing. Check your Parental controls on your router. I had mine set too strict for fortnite and my router was blocking the game at the “Checking for updates” screen. No error message just a spinning circle for all eternity. So that’s it.

tl;dr Parental controls on your router. turn them off or make them less strict and see if that’s the issue. If not then try the other suggestions.
