On September 13, 2018, a 10-episode anime series was published on Netflix with generally positive reviews. Studio Trigger, based in Tokyo, animated Cyberpunk Edgerunners under the direction of Hiroyuki Imaishi (his works include Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann, and Promare), with original music by Akira Yamaoka (works include Silent Hill).
The Japanese manager for CD Projekt Red, Satoru Honma, was recently interviewed by Famitsu, and the topic of whether or not the positive reception had prompted them to consider making a second season was brought up. However, in response, Honma stated that the story would be terminated there.
Honma’s Comments from the Interview
“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback,” Honma stated in the interview. “However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’. “Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”
As the show has been in Netflix’s global top ten for well over a month and has one of the streaming service’s highest review scores in history, it has proven to be a great success for its producers. More than a million people are logging into Cyberpunk 2077 every day, thanks to the show’s success as well as a recent patch and discount.
Honma added in his interview with Famitsu, “Overseas people say that the anime has given CDPR a second chance. “We are grateful to TRIGGER for giving us the chance to enjoy the story of V and Johnny Silverhand after watching the anime.”

After next year’s release of the Phantom Liberty add-on for Cyberpunk 2077, development on Orion will start.
