Scorn was one of the most awaited games of the year. This game was announced in 2014, and after 8 years, Ebb Software finally released the game. So naturally, when a game takes 8 years to be developed, players expect a lot from it, and Scorn was not an exception. Unfortunately, the reviews show that Scorn is not completely satisfied the players’ expectations as some are not happy with the storyline.
If you plan to start playing the game or are in the middle of the game and want to know about the story or the end of the game, this guide will be the one for you.
What Do the Story and Ending Mean in Scorn? Explained
Scorn took 8 years to be developed; during these years, the developers have generated excitement among the players about this game. It is an atmospheric horror game without ghosts and jumpscares. The story starts with a humanoid (though it doesn’t seem so; it is a rigid, bony figure with a human structure) waking up from slumber and finding himself in an alien world full of puzzles and enemies.
As you progress through the story, you’ll become more clueless as there are no clues, no tips, no objectives to complete, and no NPCs to talk to. Players find various machines and mechanisms, but no one is there to tell them how these machines work or how they should use these things to progress. Our protagonist is entirely silent.
This is like throwing you into an alien world where no one is alive except you. Starting from opening the door and entering into the hall, the game progresses further by solving more puzzles, opening doors to proceed to new areas, exploring new things, getting weapons, defeating enemies, etc. This story is pretty different from other survival horror games, especially the game’s settings. The machines and structures you find around you seem like human organs.
Neither the story nor the ending of the game is adequately explained. The ending is obscure and open to interpretations. Players can interpret it as they want. After you die in the final Act, you may question the entire process of playing the game and solving the puzzles to reach the end. However, a profound thought will help you realize this game has shown you the entire process from birth to death with a tragic ending. Scorn is about parenthood, giving birth to a child, and how society consumes human beings.
In the beginning, when the protagonist opens its eyes may be considered as a child is born. It also cuts the binds as a baby is separated from its mother’s body by cutting the cord at birth. As you further progress and solve puzzles, it shows how human beings gather experiences and grow. They can also symbolize how we make our own way and progress toward the future. The creepy creatures are the symbols of the societal norms that want to hold you back, and killing the enemies shows your fight against societal threats and your strong determination not to give up. Likewise, healing wounds and gathering ammo signifies your courage to stand up and fight back.
The parasite in the game is showing self- damage that we do to ourselves. In our lives, everything we do or every decision we make is not correct. Sometimes our activities affect us the most. In Scorn, the parasites symbolize this part. In the last Act, when you kill a machine (image below), it seems pregnant (its middle portion of the body is like a pregnant woman), and killing it symbolizes the death of a pregnant woman during an operation or some other reason. Alternatively, you can see it as a mother desperately trying to protect her child because after killing that machine, you’ll take the child and put it inside another machine to smash it.
Also, in the final Act, we see a pregnant mother figure. After opening the door, that figure carries the protagonist’s body (as mothers carry their babies) to the other side, where the parasite attacks him. Probably, at the end, when the protagonist dies, it signifies the tragedy of the death of a child in front of its mother, and the helpless mother who failed to save her child and the creature attacked him is the evil, disease, or anything that brings death to human. The game has many more images that will give you a clear picture of human life. Some evil practices of human life also have portrayed through the game. While playing it, be attentive, and you’ll probably find the meaning of every action you do in the game.
The entire game of Scorn has deep meaning. While playing the game, first, you may think of it as a meaningless story where you only have to progress cluelessly, but as you progress and especially after you reach the end, you’ll realize it is a journey of life to death. The game shows an entire life cycle. Because there is no official interpretation, everyone can interpret the game freely. If you interpret it another way, that’s also right, and that’s the fun of a game being open to interpretation.
