The only item that requires Deerskin is the Damage Mod 1 weapon mod. This is the only item that requires Deerskin x1 as well as Yarn x2. Every other item like the water bottle and rough leather can be made with optional items beside Deerskin, such as Beast Hide. If you are on your way in crafting Damage Mod 1, you will need Deerskin. The only way to get Deerskin is to slay Barrack Leaders.
If you enter any tribe’s barrack camp, you can press Q to scan your surroundings. You can spot various designations on top of the tribesmen, so you have to look around for the barrack leader. Once you find them, kill them to get Deerskin as a drop. This is a rare drop, so you have to visit several barracks overtime to farm deerskin. Luckily, you require just one for crafting damage mod 1, so you just need to try and get lucky.
